Gentle journaling prompts for the hard days
Getting a feeling out of your head and onto a page is one of the simplest, kindest things you can do for yourself — putting it into words tends to take a little of its weight off. You don't need to write well, or for long, or for anyone but you. Here are some gentle prompts for whatever today is.
A few rules (there are basically none)
Don't worry about spelling, neatness, or sounding wise. Set a small timer if a blank page is daunting — even three minutes counts. Be honest; no one's reading it. And if a prompt doesn't fit, skip it. The point isn't a good entry; it's a little relief.
The point isn't a good entry. It's a little relief.
When you're anxious or wound up
- What exactly am I worried about — in one plain sentence?
- What's in my control here, and what genuinely isn't?
- If the worst happened, how would I cope? (You usually would.)
- What would I tell a friend who was carrying this exact worry?
When you're low or flat
- What's one small thing that didn't go badly today?
- What does the kindest version of me want to say to me right now?
- What's one tiny thing that usually helps, even a little?
- If I only had to get through the next hour, what would I do with it?
When everything feels too much
- Everything that's swirling — let me just list it, messy and unsorted.
- Of all of that, what actually has to happen today?
- What's the single smallest next step I could take?
- What can wait, be done badly, or be handed to someone else?
When you're stuck on something
- What's the decision, in one plain line?
- What am I really afraid of with each option?
- Which choice moves me a little toward who I want to be?
- What's the next small, reversible step — not the whole staircase?
When you want to end the day gently
- One good thing, however small, from today.
- One thing I handled, even imperfectly.
- One kind thing I could let myself off the hook for.
- What do I want to leave behind before sleep?

One last gentle thing
Journaling helps a lot of people, but it isn't a fix for everything, and some days the page just won't come — that's okay too. If you're carrying something heavy, you don't have to write your way through it alone — and if today is one where everything feels too much, that's a gentle place to start.
